Pyrolle Disorder Treatment

2009-01-01 00.02.47 PYRROLE disorders go by many names (Pyroluria, kryptopyrrole disorder) and they exist in about 10- per cent of the population, it is a condition with many physical and psychological symptoms, and if you have never heard of it you are in good company because most GP's also don't know it exists. Your child may have hit all the usual milestones. Walking, talking and eating when they are meant too. You may notice they have a few quirks they really like routine, if they have a late night they go off the scale, they really dislike loud noises. Lots of kids are like that so you don't worry. They may start day care or pre-school/school and it is then you start to notice things are not as they should be. Often play school may report that they are struggling to cope and they may even get explosive or violent. Reading is a huge struggle - almost like there is something blocking the brain from getting the concept. Your child is completely unable to deal with stress and may cry for an hour or more about having to go to school/daycare and not wanting you to leave them. Usually by the weekend you and your child are totally exhausted. and you end up cancelling social events, swimming lessons etc because they simply won't cope. Sport or physical activity may make them feel better and they are probably able to cope with that. If any of this sounds familiar then your child may have a pyyrole disorder.

What is Pyyrole

It’s a genetic disorder that results in the inability to use zinc, vitamin B6 and arachidonic acid – a long-chain omega-6 fat. It mean's that the brain is short of those nutrients and so it struggles to process properly in times of stress. So common symptoms include inability to cope with stress, emotional mood swings and sensitivity to light and sound. It also causes learning difficulties and auditory processing disorder, which means that in a noisy environment, it’s hard to single out the sound you should be listening to. In a classroom environment, that would mean that if other children are talking, your child would struggle to hear the teacher.

Tests to Identify Pyrrole Disorder

One of the reasons we are keen to get the information out there about Pyrrolle's is that although it can cause life time behaviour problems it is also relatively easy to fix. It's easy to test for with a simple urine pyrrole test, no distressing blood test needed and it is also cheap to test for, although unfortunately you will have to pay for this yourself as it isn't covered by Medicare. Any Doctor can refer for this test although many may not know about it. Consequently its usually best to seek an appointment with a Doctor who has an interest in Functional Medicine,

Treatment For Pyrrole Disorder

If your child's pyrrolle levels do come back high then this can be quickly and effectively treated without the use of any drugs via nutrient therapy, which will normalise their zinc and B6 levels and quickly influence their behaviour. What is Nutrient therapy - it is the use of nutrients - in this case mainly zinc and B6 - to treat a problem - it is an area of growth within medicine as it does not use any drugs so avoids the side effects and complications that drug therapy entails. Again you are looking for a Functional Medicine Doctor, as most GP's are so busy that they have to focus mainly on what is available under Medicare and they do not have the training or time to explore Nutritional Therapy.

Spotting Pyrrole Problems in Young Kids
